The UK coaching staff wrapped up a busy recruiting weekend with a Sunday visit to Florida, where John Calipari and two assistants met with uncommitted senior Dakari Johnson.

Calipari, Orlando Antigua and Kenny Payne visited with the five-star center, who later posted a picture of himself with the UK coaches.

Johnson has Montverde Academy off to a 6-0 start this season (see his individual stats here). He is teammates with Florida signee Kasey Hill and class of 2014 shooting guard D’Angelo Russell, a UK target.

Montverde Coach Kevin Boyle talked to Next Cats a couple of weeks ago about UK’s recruitment of Johnson, who attended Sayre Middle School in Lexington and was teammates with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist while playing at St. Patrick High in New Jersey.

Other schools recruiting Johnson include Florida, Syracuse, Georgetown, Missouri and Ohio State.

He is not expected to make a college decision until the spring.

On Saturday night, Calipari traveled to Minnesota to see Tyus Jones, the No. 1 point guard in the class of 2014.

  1. I remember watching Dakari play with MKG in high school, and I can’t believe this is the same guy. He looks like an absolute monster now. When he was a Freshman he looked like he would turn out to be a bit like D. Caracter, D. coleman or some of those guys that have a bit of baby fat. Instead he looks like Patrick Young or Pat Paterson. Very suprised by his transformation. (pleasantly) Thanks, as always, for the updates, Ben.

  2. I would love to see Dakari come to the Bluegrass state and play with the already ranked #1 class of 2013. He is what I would call a throw back center in that he plays mostly with his back to the basket and has great touch around the rim. With this guy Cal wouldnt have to worry about him being pushed around by other centers like some of the thinner bigmen that have come through UKs program recently. If Cal can get this guy and add 1 of the big 3 that he is in with then the 2013 recruiting class would be the best ever no doubt.

  3. Why wait bid man, the door to stardom is open now, wait and it maybe too late!

  4. I would like to see Dakari schedule an official visit sometime in Jan. or Feb for 1 of the Cats home games so he can see what the atmosphere is like at Rupp Arena and see the crzy fan support he will get if he chooses KY. By choosing UK he will be guaranteeing himself a higher draft pick position by 20 to 30 % over any other school he might choose and he will be much more prepared to play in the NBA after he completes his 1st season at UK. He also has what his mom calls extended family in Lexington and he will be around them and thats a relief to his mother.
