The March 3 game in Louisville featuring UK commitment Dakari Johnson and top high school recruit Andrew Wiggins has been canceled.
The game’s organizer, Clay Dade, said in a statement Wednesday that “exhaustive efforts to attain a title sponsor(s) to cover the cost of using Freedom Hall were unsuccessful,” and the coaches of both Huntington Prep and Montverde agreed to call off the game.
After plans to hold the game at Freedom Hall fell through Tuesday, attempts were made to move the matchup to somewhere else in the area. That plan also didn’t work out.
The Montverde roster features Johnson, Florida signee Kasey Hill and uncommitted junior D’Angelo Russell, a Louisville native who is being recruited by both U of L and Kentucky.
Wiggins plays for Huntington Prep and is scheduled to take his official visit to UK on Feb. 27. He also is considering Florida State, North Carolina and Kansas.
“It’s a shame. Fans deserved this game,” Dade said in the statement. “The players and coaches deserved this game. I know Dakari Johnson, Andrew Wiggins and D’Angelo Russell were looking forward to it. But it happens, I guess. Even in Kentucky.”
The statement also said that Freedom Hall has refunded all tickets that were bought.
