The accolades continue to mount for Andrew Wiggins.

On Wednesday, the uncommitted Kentucky recruit was surprised at his high school with the Gatorade National Player of the Year award. Wiggins, a senior at Huntington Prep (W.Va.), is considered the No. 1 player in high school basketball. He averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season and led the Express to a 30-3 record.

Former NBA great Alonzo Mourning made the trip to Huntington to surprise Wiggins with the award, which recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the court.

In addition to his success as a basketball player, Wiggins has a 3.35 GPA and volunteers as a goodwill visitor at the Cabell Huntington Hospital for children.

Last week, Wiggins was in Atlanta to accept his Naismith National Player of the Year trophy. He is also a McDonald’s All-American, Jordan Brand All-American and will represent the World team for the second consecutive year at next month’s Nike Hoop Summit.

The 6-foot-8 Canadian has narrowed his list of schools to UK, Florida State, North Carolina and Kansas. There is no timetable for his decision.

Last year’s Gatorade Player of the Year was Jabari Parker, who was then just a junior and will play for Duke next season. Brandon Knight was a two-time winner of the award (2009-10) and is the only Kentucky player who has ever received the honor.

  1. Wiggins of course was the only possible choice for this award since he is on a level of his very own. Wiggins is preparing to make the biggest decision of his basketball life as to where he is going to play his 1 year of college ball. He is also collecting one award after the other and most of us can only imagine how he must feel about all this attention but his response to that attention is one of humility and gratitude which is another indicator that he is a fine young man as well as a top notch basketball player.

  2. After MJ’s private visit I is easy to predict his choice.

  3. Here’s the choice for Wiggins…well, to be honest there is no choice. He can spend a year in college at UK and go to the Pro’s WITH “NCAA Champ” under his belt Or go to any other school ( ( fall short ) go to the Pros WITHOUT. He’ll only have one chance..seems like a no brainer!

  4. commit to kentucky, instant billionaire endorsements, endorsements, endorsements!!!!!! GO CATS
