Madison Central Coach Allen Feldhaus Jr. spoke at length Wednesday about his start player, new UK commitment Dominique Hawkins. Here are some of the highlights:

Feldhaus noted that Hawkins played football and says the future Wildcat should improve even more now that he’s focused on only one sport:

“When he played the Harrison twins, I think he had had three practices. I think he’s only going to get better when he’s able to concentrate on basketball year round.”

Hawkins scored 29 points in that game against the Harrison twins. Feldhaus said he has what it takes to compete with elite players:

“I’ve never seen Dominique get rattled. That’s just the type of kid he is. He believes in himself.”

Feldhaus also said Hawkins won’t be intimidated by vocal coaches:

“Not that I have to get on him very much, but he can take a chewing as good as anybody. He’s one of those that’s not going to hang his head. He’s going to look you in the eye … and he’s going to say, ‘Yes, sir.’”

Feldhaus said Calipari compared Hawkins to another recent Wildcat:

“He thinks he’s got a lot of the same qualities — the toughness, the strength that Eric Bledsoe has.”

Feldhaus on why it took so long to make the UK offer public:

“(Calipari) told us he was a scholarship player, but he had some business to take care of there with his own team from the previous year. And he wanted to take care of all that first.”

And Feldhaus’ message to those who think Hawkins is in over his head:

“I know there’s people out there that say he cannot play at UK. But there were people his freshman year when I said he would have a chance to be Mr. Basketball, they said I was crazy then too. Those people, I think, they understand what I’m talking about now.

“I promise you he won’t be the 12th guy on the team.”

  1. Cal has signed a lot of 5-star players for next year who most likely will only be around for a year, but I believe signing Hawkins was one of his best moves. This young man will be the backbone of the Cats for some time. It’s always great to have a KY Mr. Basketball on the team. Remember Pitino signed a Ky Mr. Basketball, E.Justice, and kept him for two yrs and then ran him off. Another shinning example of a slime ball coach who cares for his family and players.

  2. It’s great to have you on the team Dominique, we’re looking forward to an exciting year!
