Mr. Basketball Dominique Hawkins committed to Kentucky on Wednesday, but he said after his announcement that he was leaning toward Western Kentucky before receiving the UK scholarship offer.

Here’s more on that, along with some other Hawkins’ quotes that didn’t make the main story.

Hawkins on receiving the UK offer:

“I had a little thinking to do, because I really did like Western. They’ve been really recruiting me hard. That’s the best recruiting that they probably ever did on a kid. I appreciate what they did. But once Kentucky came it was kind of a no brainer that I was going to go there.”

Hawkins said he was definitely staying in state:

“I’m a momma’s boy and I like her food, so I wanted to stay closer to home.”

Hawkins said UK assistant Orlando Antigua contacted him Wednesday:

“He texted me this morning and told me, ‘I’m proud of you and I’m glad you can be a part of this family.’”

Hawkins on going up against the Harrison twins in practice:

“The twins (are) really, really talented and great guys too. They can shoot, they can … they can do it all basically. Anything you ask them to do, I know they can do it.”

Hawkins on he and Derek Willis being part of the 2013 class:

“We’ll have something to prove. We know we can play as well as anybody else. We’re just going to have to prove what we’ve got to them, because they really don’t know much about us.”

What was Hawkins thinking during the McDonald’s All-American Game?:

“It’s crazy. I’m going to be playing with six McDonald’s All-Americans. I can’t believe it.”

Will Hawkins be UK’s last commitment in the class of 2013?:

“This Wiggins stuff — I don’t know. So I’m not going to answer any of that.”

Hawkins on the expectations for next season:

“40-0 talk — that’s really crazy. But winning it all’s not crazy to me, with this team. The team we’ve got, we could make history. It’s going to be a real fun season.”
