The No. 1 prospect in the class of 2014 took the first step in narrowing down his recruitment Wednesday.

Chicago big man Jahlil Okafor tweeted a list of his “final” eight schools: Arizona, Baylor, Duke, Illinois, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State and Ohio State. Among the major programs that have recruited Okafor but did not make the cut were North Carolina, Louisville and Florida.

Most of the major recruiting services rank Okafor as the No. 1 overall player in 2014, and he hasn’t been shy about his wish to play at the next level with best friend and No. 1 point guard Tyus Jones.

There are six schools that both Jones and Okafor are still considering: UK, Duke, Michigan State, Baylor, Ohio State and Kansas. Jones also lists homestate Minnesota, which didn’t make Okafor’s cut.

Jones and Okafor will take a trip to Baylor in late August for their first official visit.

  1. Ben, you guys have Rashad Vaughn as having a confirmed offer from UK but but many tell me that he hasnt been offered yet. I have seen on 3 or 4 sites that he does have an offer but some still insist that he doesnt have one yet. Can you clear this up for me. Thanks

  2. Vaughn claimed an offer from Kentucky last fall. As far as I know, he still has one.

  3. Well since they said 99.9% of a chance they will play together probably means neither Arizona or Illinois will get okafor or Minnesota will probably not get tyus jones

  4. “Consensus” appears to be Okafor to OSU and Jones to Duke. If they actually play together, Duke > OSU. UK isn’t a serious contender for Jones, and hard to see Okafor and Towns coexisting…

  5. Being from Chicago I really want Okafor and Alexander to go to UK. Cal has had such a good track record with kids from here. It would be a mistake for Okafor to go anywhere but UK.
