Class of 2014 forward Stanley Johnson tweeted Wednesday that he will use one of his five official visits on a trip to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness weekend in October.
Johnson, rated No. 8 overall in the class by Scout.com, is considering eight schools, and UK is widely thought to be a favorite. The Fullerton, Calif., native also is looking at Arizona, UCLA, Southern Cal, Duke, Florida, Oregon and Kansas.
Big Blue Madness is scheduled for Oct. 18 in Rupp Arena. Top 2014 point guard Emmanuel Mudiay said Tuesday that he also plans to attend Madness. Last year’s event drew several star recruits, including the Harrison twins, Marcus Lee, James Young, Derek Willis, Trey Lyles, Cliff Alexander and Karl Towns.
UK’s Madness guest list for this year will surely get longer over the next few weeks.
Johnson also said Wednesday that he plans to attend Arizona’s “Red-Blue Game,” which is set for Oct. 12. His AAU teammate Aaron Gordon will be a freshman for those Wildcats this season. Another AAU teammate, Brandon Ashley, is returning for his sophomore season in Tuscon.
The 6-foot-7 small forward will visit Florida on Oct. 30.
John Calipari and his assistants were a constant presence at Johnson’s games with the Oakland Soldiers this past spring. In an interview with the Herald-Leader in April, Johnson said that attention has not gone unnoticed.
“(Calipari’s) really excited about me and he really wants me to be there,” he said. “I feel that (from him) more than a lot of other coaches. Coming from the biggest school on my list — quote, unquote — that’s a lot coming from him.”
