Top 100 prospect Angel Delgado will transfer to Huntington Prep for his senior season, Coach Rob Fulford told the Herald-Leader on Monday.
Delgado — a 6-foot-8 power forward — came to the United States from the Dominican Republic a year ago and played last season for a high school in Troy, N.Y.
John Calipari and UK assistants Orlando Antigua and Kenny Payne watched Delgado play multiple times at last week’s Nike Peach Jam. Calipari and Antigua are also familiar with Delgado through their affiliation with the Dominican national team.
Dana Dingle coaches Delgado’s AAU team and also played for Calipari at UMass in the 1990s. Dingle is handling Delgado’s recruitment. He told the Herald-Leader on Monday that Delgado does not yet have a UK scholarship offer.
He does have offers from Louisville, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Virginia, St. John’s and several others.
A UK offer could be coming soon, and 24/7 Sports analyst Jerry Meyer is predicting that Angel Delgado will end up at Kentucky on his “Crystal Ball” picks page.
Scout.com ranks Delgado as the No. 61 overall prospect in the class of 2014. His profile has been on the rise in recent weeks, and he led the Nike EYBL circuit in rebounding prior to Peach Jam.
“His calling card is going to be his energy and his ability to rebound,” Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader last week. “He has an elite skill and rebounding is something that obviously translates to the next level. I think that makes him an extremely valuable recruit.”
At Huntington Prep, Delgado will join point guard Josh Perkins and wings Jalen Lindsey and Montaque Gill-Caesar. UK has expressed interest in all of those players.
Huntington Prep played several games in the state of Kentucky last season, and the team is expected to do the same in 2013-14.
