UK commitment Karl Towns Jr. scored six points in 10 minutes off the bench Thursday to help the Dominican national team defeat Jamaica 78-60 in the FIBA Americas tournament.

The Dominican squad — coached by UK assistant Orlando Antigua — is one of eight teams still in contention for the title. Thursday’s game was the first in the second stage of the tournament. Each team will play three more times, and four of the remaining eight squads will then advance to the semifinal round. Those four semifinalists qualify for next year’s World Cup in Spain.

Towns was 2-for-4 from the field and made both of his free-throw attempts in Thursday’s game. He also grabbed two rebounds.

Towns — a 7-footer from New Jersey — is UK’s only commitment from the Class of 2014.

The Dominican national team will play Puerto Rico on Friday night.
