Kelly Oubre is considered the No. 11 overall prospect in the Class of 2014 by Scout.com.

Five-star small forward Kelly Oubre announced Tuesday that he has committed to Kansas.

Oubre — a 6-foot-6 prospect in the Class of 2014 — recently said that Kansas and Kentucky were his top two schools. He took an official visit to Lawrence for the Jayhawks’ midnight madness event last weekend. He was scheduled to use his second official visit on a trip to Lexington for next week’s Big Blue Madness, but he cancelled that visit.

UK started seriously recruiting Oubre over the summer and offered him a scholarship after the Nike Peach Jam event in July. John Calipari flew to Texas last month for an in-home visit with Oubre’s father, then the pair flew together to Nevada to meet Oubre, who is playing his senior season at Findlay Prep.

Scout.com ranks Oubre as the No. 11 overall prospect in the Class of 2014. He’s rated No. 4 in the class by 247Sports.

His commitment to Kansas marks Bill Self’s second consecutive high-profile recruiting victory over Calipari. The Kansas coach also beat out UK for Andrew Wiggins, who was the No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2013.

Oubre’s commitment to Kansas leaves Stanley Johnson as the only small forward in the senior class that UK is seriously pursuing. Johnson is scheduled to make his official visit to Lexington for next week’s Big Blue Madness. The 6-foot-7 prospect is considered a top-10 player in the class. He is also considering Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon and Florida.

Johnson is not expected to make a college decision until January, at the earliest.

UK currently has two commitments for the Class of 2014: New Jersey center Karl Towns Jr. and Chicago point guard Tyler Ulis. Two more highly touted recruits — Devin Booker and James Blackmon Jr. — are expected to make their college decisions in the coming weeks. Both players have UK high on their lists.

  1. Like Cal has often said, Kentucky isn’t for everyone…wish him well in his one year at Kansas.

  2. Do you believe since Calipari hasn’t gotten some top recruits that looked liked they were heavy on Kentucky at some point(Okafor, Jones, Oubre, Alexander, Vaughn, and Mudiay) this sends them into possible panic mode if they don’t get either Johnson, Booker, Lyles, Blackmon, or Turner?

  3. I think we will have good recruiting years…and great recruiting years…great recruiting years means you can win right away…good recruiting years means you may have a year like last year. As long as there’s some older recruits who can come up as they get more experienced like Liggins, Miller, and Harrelson you still may be in the mix…but we aren’t gonna get the killer class every year…jus won’t happen…that’s why you always need to recruit longterm too…
