About 30 minutes before kickoff Saturday night, an Alabama assistant spotted Matt Elam standing on the Kentucky sideline and got his attention.
The Bama coach and the top recruit exchanged a few words, and then the assistant made a motion as if he were shooting a basketball, laughed and walked away.
Calling UK a “basketball school” is nothing new in football recruiting. That basketball success was probably more of a plus than a minus Saturday.
John Calipari stopped by Commonwealth Stadium to mingle with some of the Cats’ biggest football recruits, and Elam was one of them.
The four-star defensive tackle, whose favorites include UK and Alabama, tweeted out a photo of himself and Calipari toward the end of the game. He later tweeted about the “celebrity status” he gets when in Lexington.
Elam got a lot of attention on this trip.
He was hanging out with Drew Barker and some other UK commitments on the field before the game when Coach Mark Stoops came over to say hello. Elam, who wore a UK jacket over an Alabama shirt, took a photo with Stoops near midfield.
Barker also posted a photo he took with Calipari.
“(Shoutout) to THE man Coach Cal!” Barker said.
