James Blackmon Jr. won’t be following in his father’s footsteps.

The highly touted shooting guard from Marion, Ind., announced his commitment to Indiana on Thursday night. Going into the day, most recruiting observers expected Blackmon to choose Kentucky, which is where his father played in the 1980s.

Blackmon Jr. originally committed to the Hoosiers during his freshman year of high school, but he backed out of that pledge in August.

His five finalists included Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State and Kansas. He took an official visit to UK for Big Blue Madness earlier this month and was also in Lexington on an unofficial trip in August.

Scout.com ranks Blackmon as the No. 33 overall prospect in the Class of 2014. National analyst Evan Daniels said the 6-foot-2 prospect shot up about 20 spots in the rankings after a stellar summer and his recent showing at Team USA Basketball training camp.

“James Blackmon is probably the best shooter in the country,” Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “He’s just a lights-out shooter. He’s not the fastest or most-athletic guy, but he gets to the spots he needs to get to. He’s a high-level shot maker. He’s going to score a ton of points in college.”

UK got a commitment from shooting guard Devin Booker earlier in the day. Booker joined UK’s recruiting class of 2014 that already included New Jersey center Karl Towns and Chicago point guard Tyler Ulis. That class is ranked No. 3 in the country by Scout.com.

  1. I guess he was afraid he couldn’t live up to what his father did at KY.
