What’s up next for Kentucky basketball recruiting?

John Calipari added one highly touted shooting guard to his recruiting class of 2014 on Thursday, and he missed out on another.

So what’s next for the Wildcats?

UK currently has a three-man class consisting of Devin Booker, Karl Towns Jr. and Tyler Ulis. The Cats will likely need at least a couple of other newcomers to take the place of the expected departures from this season’s star-studded team.

The four uncommitted seniors who UK has been targeting are Stanley Johnson, Trey Lyles, Jahlil Okafor and Myles Turner.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels offered some insight on what UK fans should expect next.

“I think Trey Lyles makes a decision soon and I think Kentucky is the leader in the clubhouse,” Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “Stanley Johnson, Jahlil Okafor — at this stage, I don’t see Kentucky getting those guys.”

Daniels noted that Turner — the No. 2 overall recruit in the class — is not expected to sign with a school until the spring. The 7-footer from Texas has only taken one official visit so far, to Ohio State. He is also considering Kentucky, Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas.

Okafor’s official list consists of UK, Duke, Kansas and Baylor. But Duke and Kansas are the clear favorites in that recruitment, and it’s unclear whether the Chicago big man is even still considering UK.

Johnson’s final five schools are UK, Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon and Florida. The 6-foot-7 small forward from California visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness, but most analysts are predicting he will ultimately choose Arizona.

Lyles is down to UK and Louisville and could announce a decision soon.

The early signing period begins Nov. 13.

  1. Ben, we didn’t get Blackmon and most likely we will lose the Harrison twins and james young. All we have is tyler ulis and devin booker. People also don’t see us getting Stanley Johnson but we need a small forward for this class and really another 2 guard. Do you see calipari going after Jonah bolden a small forward and also trying to go after rashard Vaughn again? Wouldn’t you agree that this class needs at least one more wing/guard or possibly two?

  2. I agree that they need another wing/guard. I don’t see them getting back in Vaughn’s recruitment. I think Bolden is a more likely option.

  3. Ben, also dan bodner another uk writer suggested that maybe cal might go after torian graham a shooting guard who is a top juco player, I know in the past we looked at graham and it seems he has improved a lot since playing juco. Do you think if we went after him that we would have a good shot at getting him?

  4. If UK went after Graham, they might have a good shot. But I don’t see UK going after him.

  5. Looks like another repeat of last year’s shorthanded UK team.

  6. I doubt if Cal will cut himself short again, and I wouldn’t give up on all of the guys that some think we won’t get. To say the least, Cal’s recruiting has been impressive! When the dust settles, I think we’ll be reloaded again.

  7. Don’t forget about Hawkins, Willis and Marcus Lee. I believe if these guys hang around to be sophomores and beyond they will be very good players. Heck they are pretty darn good now. What do you think Ben?
