UK women’s basketball coach Matthew Mitchell has signed four players to his recruiting class of 2014.
The program officially announced the signings of guard Jaycee Coe, forwards Alexis Jennings and Alyssa Rice and junior college center Ivana Jakubcova on Tuesday morning. UK’s class is currently ranked No. 17 in the country by ESPN and No. 19 by All-Star Girls Report.
“We are very excited to welcome four new members to the UK Hoops family,” Mitchell said in a press release. “We are looking for young women who possess high character and the ability to play championship basketball. Kentucky is a unique place and we need people who appreciate our uniqueness. We need people who value character, principles, preparation and sacrifice; the Kentucky way of doing things. We found four exceptional people who are committed to the Kentucky way both on and off the court.”
Coe is a 5-foot-11 prospect from Cookeville, Tenn., and considered the 25th-best shooting guard in the senior class. Jakubcova — a native of Slovakia — is a 6-6 center at Murray State College in Tishomingo, Okla., and ranked as the No. 20 overall junior-college player in the country. Jennings — a 6-2 prospect from Madison, Ala. — is the No. 9 forward in the senior class, according to ESPN. Rice — a native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio — is a 6-3 forward and the No. 20 overall player in the Class of 2014, per ESPN.
Here’s what the UK coach had to say about each of his signees:
On Coe: “Jaycee is an outstanding player who will make us better. She is a very dangerous offensive threat with the ability to make all the plays we require in our system. Jaycee has a polished offensive skill set. She is a tremendous ball handler and an elite level shooter with extremely deep range. I felt like Jaycee was a player we had to have to make this a successful class and I am ecstatic she chose Kentucky.”
On Jakubcova: “Ivana is an exciting player for our 2014 class. She has great size and speed which will be an asset in our up-tempo style of play. She has great hands which we value greatly in our post players. Ivana is a very good shooter and her ability to make shots will be valuable to our offense. Ivana is an extremely hard worker and will be a tremendous asset to the Kentucky program.” (Note: Jakubcova will have two seasons of eligibility at Kentucky).
On Jennings: “Alexis is an extremely versatile post player who possesses all of the characteristics we look for at Kentucky. She is strong, athletic and skilled. Her ability to run the floor was attractive to us. Alexis has 3-point shooting range which will stretch the defense and she can also put the ball on the floor and get to the basket to score. She is hard-nosed and tough on the defensive end and she will be very effective in full-court press situations. I am thrilled Alexis chose Kentucky. She will be a significant player here.”
On Rice: “Alyssa possesses all of the qualities we desire in a post player. Her incredible combination of size and speed make her a perfect fit for Kentucky. She is clearly one of the top post players in the 2014 class. Her versatility makes her very difficult to defend. Alyssa is a great ball handler, a great shooter and a tough finisher around the basket. Her ability to run the floor will be very valuable to our program. Alyssa has a tremendous work ethic and I am confident that her Kentucky career will be filled with success.”
