UK’s star-studded freshman class was once again a point of discussion in ESPN analyst Chad Ford’s weekly NBA Draft chat Wednesday.
Ford released his “Big Board” earlier Wednesday, and the new list showed a lowered draft stock for most of UK’s freshmen. Julius Randle still holds the No. 2 spot — behind Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins — but Randle was the only Wildcat in the Top 10.
Next came James Young at No. 12, Andrew Harrison at No. 14, and sophomores Willie Cauley-Stein at No. 25 and Alex Poythress at No. 28. Freshmen Dakari Johnson and Aaron Harrison were listed among the “next five in.”
Every Kentucky player except for Randle was ranked higher in Ford’s previous update two weeks ago. A reader in Ford’s chat pointed out that those players have been “disappointing” so far this season.
“It’s early and there is so much talent on the team that it’s hard for any of them to put up the numbers they would on a team where they were the focal point,” Ford responded. “Remember, Anthony Davis’ numbers in November? Everyone was questioning whether he was worthy of the No. 1 pick. Randle has clearly been impressive. I still think James Young and Andrew Harrison will be lottery picks. It might be another year for Aaron Harrison, Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee however.”
Ford also answered specific questions about Randle and former UK point guard John Wall, and the analyst called Anthony Davis the best power forward and No. 4 overall player in the NBA.
