One of the biggest summer basketball events in the country is moving from Florida to Louisville in 2014.
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and local officials announced Monday that the AAU national championships and Super Showcase events will be held at the Kentucky Exposition Center from 2014 to 2016.
Recent participants have included Julius Randle, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, Dakari Johnson, Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin. Many of the best high school players in the country end up playing in the event, which occurs during the July evaluation period and draws top coaches like UK’s John Calipari and Louisville’s Rick Pitino.
Next year’s national championships are expected to attract 340 teams, 200 officials, more than 900 college coaches and scores of national media and will generate more than $3 million in annual economic impact, according to the AAU press release. Detailed ticket information will be released in January.
The national championships and Super Showcase events were held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex near Orlando, Fla., in recent years.
