Winter weather forced the UK men’s basketball team to land in St. Louis instead of Columbia, Mo., on Friday night. Coach John Calipari turned it into a recruiting opportunity.
Calipari watched St. Louis star Jayson Tatum score 33 points and pull down 14 rebounds in Chaminade Prep’s 70-59 victory over rival CBC. It was the second time this season that the UK coach has seen Tatum play. The 6-foot-7 wing had 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a blowout victory at Lexington Catholic last month.
Tatum — one of the top five players in the Class of 2016 — also visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness in October. He was the first player from his class to receive a scholarship offer from Kentucky. He also has offers from North Carolina, Kansas, Michigan State, Florida and several other top programs.
UNC Coach Roy Williams was in St. Louis on Thursday to see him play for the second time this season.
Tatum is expected to return Calipari’s favor Saturday. The top prospect tweeted that he will be at the UK-Missouri game in Columbia.
