INDIANAPOLIS — Thon Maker could become the next class of 2016 basketball prospect to end up with a scholarship offer from Kentucky.

Maker’s guardian, Edward Smith, told the Herald-Leader on Friday night that he got a call from UK assistant coach Kenny Payne last week. Payne told Smith about the program and gave him the “this isn’t for everybody” speech that John Calipari and his staff deliver to all prospective recruits.

Payne also said that Calipari would be calling soon. The UK head coach is typically the one who extends scholarship offers, and it’s possible that will come with Calipari’s call.

There are currently three players in the class of 2016 with confirmed offers from UK: Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles and M.J. Cage.

ESPN ranks Maker — a 7-footer from the Sudan who plays for a high school in Virginia — as the No. 1 overall prospect in the class. He is ranked no lower than No. 3 by any of the major recruiting services.

We’ll have much more on Maker and his recruitment later this weekend.

  1. I think Kentucky would be a very wise choice for Thon. At Kentucky he will get the expert training he needs to move on to the next level. He will play with the best, be a part of the winningest team in college ball history, be supported by the biggest fan base in college basketball, have a shot at winning a national title, and on and on. Calipari is a great coach that cares about his players both on and off the court. He prepares them for life as well as basketball.
I have the deepest respect for this man! Good luck Thon where ever you decide to play in college.
