Las Vegas basketball star Ray Smith was just starting to hear from Kentucky when he decided to cut his list of schools to 10 earlier this month.
UK wasn’t on it.
“The list cut was basically just to let people know that I’m really starting to sit down with my father and talk about what my decisions are,” Smith said. “We’re sitting down every day and evaluating every college.
“My ten is not a hard ten. Someone can slide in at any time.”
So there’s still a chance for the Wildcats to get more involved in the recruitment, but the window is closing. Smith is already starting to set up his official visits and said that he “definitely” wants to be committed and signed by the time his senior season begins.
The 10 schools that made Smith’s cut were Arizona, Arizona State, California, Georgetown, Louisville, Oregon, Southern Cal, Texas, UCLA and Wake Forest.
Smith said that his father had been speaking with UK’s coaches before they decided to trim the list, but the player himself has never had any direct contact with anyone from UK’s staff.
The 6-foot-8 wing is considered the No. 25 overall prospect in the class of 2015 by 247Sports. UK seems to be targeting Jaylen Brown as the top player at the small forward position for this cycle. Derrick Jones also has a UK scholarship offer, as does Carlton Bragg, who said Saturday that he’s being recruited at the “3” and “4” positions.
Smith plans to take official visits to UCLA and Georgetown next month and has scheduled an official visit to Louisville for Sept. 27. Arizona is seen by many as the favorite in his recruitment, and he said that program is likely to get one of his other two official visits.
