SUWANEE, Ga. — Diamond Stone will announce his college decision on ESPN’s signing day special on Nov. 12, he said Wednesday from the Under Armour national showcase.
Stone — the No. 1 overall basketball prospect in the class of 2015, according to Scout.com — said he plans to start taking official visits later this summer and will be prepared to announce his decision and sign with the school of his choice during the early signing period.
Bob Stone, the player’s father, said that his son will take all five official visits before making that decision.
Kentucky’s scholarship offer to Diamond Stone was just made public last week, but both father and son said Wednesday that the offer has actually been on the table for more than a year. The 6-foot-10 center from Milwaukee has long been one of the top prospects in the class of 2015.
Bob Stone said that UK Coach John Calipari and assistant coach Kenny Payne have been to Milwaukee multiple times to visit his son. The Stones don’t often talk about recruiting, but other schools known to be involved with Stone include Duke, Kansas, Wisconsin, Marquette and UConn, among many others.
Diamond Stone and fellow UK target Malik Newman — another top-five recruit — have been talking publicly about attending the same school. Newman said Wednesday that the “package deal” was still the plan “as of right now,” but noted that both players would have to find the right fit for themselves.
Stone said there’s a 50 percent chance it will happen.
“The package deal is up in the air,” he said. “We’re still working that out – seeing if this is really what we want to do. I’m still open with every school. Right now, we’re just waiting.”
Newman isn’t planning to make his college decision until after his senior season.
