BENTON — UK recruit Malik Newman finished four points shy of the Marshall County Hoop Fest scoring record in Saturday night’s loss.
Newman had 42 points for Callaway (Miss.) in a 85-71 loss to Orangeville Prep (Canada) on the final night of the Hoop Fest. NBA shooting guard Monta Ellis holds the event record with a 46-point performance in 2004. No other player has scored more than Newman’s 42 points in Hoop Fest play.
Kansas Coach Bill Self and UK assistant Kenny Payne were among those in attendance.
Newman was 15 for 29 from the floor and made four of nine three-point attempts and eight of 12 free throws. He was treated for cramps with about 2 minutes left in the game and did not score the rest of the way.
The class of 2015 prospect scored 35 points in Friday night’s Hoop Fest loss to Archbishop Carroll (Pa.).
Newman is considering Kentucky, Kansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and several other schools. He will not make a college decision until the spring.
Fellow UK recruit Thon Maker had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Orangeville Prep.
