UK Coach John Calipari and assistant coach Kenny Payne traveled to Mississippi on Monday night to check out Malik Newman, one of the program’s top recruiting targets in the class of 2015.

Newman scored 50 points — 32 in the first half — in front of the UK coaches to lead his Callaway (Miss.) squad to an 85-69 victory over Provine High in the championship game of the Pepsi Holiday Tournament in Jackson, Miss.

Kansas Coach Bill Self and Mississippi State Coach Rick Ray were also expected to attend Monday night’s game.

Earlier in the day, Newman scored 40 points in just 17 minutes of a blowout victory. Newman was named the tournament’s MVP.

Newman, who took an unofficial visit to Lexington for Big Blue Madness in October, is still considering several schools. He is not expected to make a decision until the spring.

  1. Best high school player I’ve ever seen.
Hope you make UK your home.

  2. “Kentucky is not for everyone, but I do know one thing, it was meant for him”.
