UK assistant coach Kenny Payne was in his home state of Mississippi on Wednesday night to see top recruiting target Malik Newman, who was playing in the first round of the state tournament.
Newman is the only uncommitted guard in the class of 2015 with a UK scholarship offer, and he’s widely considered the No. 1 guard in the country. Payne’s trip to see him play Wednesday was first reported by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
The 6-foot-3 prospect has narrowed his list of schools to UK, Kansas, Louisiana State, N.C. State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Newman has not taken any of his official visits and there is no timetable for his college decision, though he has said that he will not announce his choice before April 1.
Assistant coaches from Kansas, Mississippi State and N.C. State were also at Wednesday’s game, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
John Calipari has seen him play multiple times this season. Newman visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness in October and also watched the Cats play LSU last month in Baton Rouge.
