New Hampshire native Wenyen Gabriel picked up a scholarship offer from Coach John Calipari and Kentucky on Saturday night.
Gabriel — a 6-foot-9 power forward from Manchester, N.H. — plays his high school ball for Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Massachusetts and has been a standout player for the Mass Rivals squad on the Adidas circuit.
He already had scholarship offers from Maryland, UConn, Virginia and Texas, among many others. Duke is also among the schools that has showed serious interest in his recruitment.
247Sports ranks Gabriel as the No. 67 overall prospect in the class of 2016.
Kentucky will look to add multiple post players from that group. There’s a possibility that the Cats could lose Skal Labissiere, Marcus Lee and Alex Poythress to next year’s NBA Draft.
New Zealand power forward Tai Wynyard has committed to UK for the class of 2016, though he seems likely to join the team this December as a mid-season enrollee.
Other frontcourt players on UK’s radar for 2016 include Harry Giles, Marques Bolden, Jarrett Allen, Udoka Azubuike, Edrice Adebayo and Sacha Killeya-Jones.
