BENTON — Five-star recruit Jarred Vanderbilt is clearly one of John Calipari’s top targets in the class of 2017.

Vanderbilt, who scored 23 points in a loss at the Marshall County Hoop Fest late Saturday night, hosted the UK coach twice for visits at his Texas high school during the fall recruiting period. Calipari was in Marshall County to see him play the final game of the Hoop Fest on Sunday.

The 6-foot-8 forward said he might also try to visit UK’s campus when he’s in Lexington for the Thoroughbred Classic this coming weekend.

“I think it’s a great program,” Vanderbilt said. “Coach Cal’s a great coach. He just knows how to develop people and send them to the next level. On the court and off the court. The program speaks for itself. They have numerous guys in the league, and it seems like their games changed since they went there.”

Vanderbilt is considered the No. 7 overall prospect in the class of 2017. His Victory Prep squad is scheduled to play fellow UK target DeAndre Ayton and Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and five-star recruit Rawle Alkins and Word of God (N.C.) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.

A former AAU teammate of UK signee De’Aaron Fox, Vanderbilt said he is nowhere near a college decision. He listed UK along with Kansas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Florida State and Duke, noting that he has no plans to narrow his list of schools until next summer.
