SPARTANBURG, S.C. — UK has been in contact with five-star basketball player Reggie Perry, a class of 2018 prospect who decommitted from Southeastern Conference rival Arkansas last week and is now considering other options in his recruitment.
Perry — a 6-foot-9 prospect from Thomasville, Ga. — told the Herald-Leader on Friday that UK assistant coach Kenny Payne has called and expressed interest in his recruitment. Perry is the No. 15 overall player in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
He had been committed to the Razorbacks for nearly a year.
“First off, it had nothing to do with the coaching staff or the players (who would be) around me or anything like that,” Perry said. “That’s what I lot of people have been saying. But, really, I wanted to be closer to home and do what’s best for my family.”
Perry says proximity to his hometown — which is about 9 hours from Lexington — would be part of his decision moving forward, though he said Arkansas would still be under consideration.
Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida State and several others had extended scholarship offers to Perry before his commitment to Arkansas last August.
He said he’d be interested to hear more from Kentucky.
“They’re a really good program,” Perry said. “But, obviously, I’d have to take a visit, talk to the coaches and see how they are.”
Perry said he’ll likely narrow down his school list after the summer.
