We’ve been hearing for the past few months that Kentucky is the most likely college destination for five-star point guard Tyrese Maxey.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball now reflects that prediction, following a huge swing of picks away from Southern Methodist and toward UK over the past few days. As of Thursday night, Kentucky is a major favorite on Maxey’s Crystal Ball page.
John Calipari will have an in-home visit with Maxey this weekend, the UK coach’s second trip to Texas in the past week to meet with the 17-year-old star. Maxey is the No. 2 point guard in the 2019 composite rankings behind only Ashton Hagans, who has already committed to UK and is expected to reclassify to 2018 this summer so he can play for the Wildcats next season.
Maxey has also been the subject of reclassification rumors, but he’s much more likely to stay in the 2019 class than Hagans, who picked Kentucky on Tuesday.
SMU hired Maxey’s father as its director of player development last summer, but — according to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein on Thursday night — the player’s father is no longer in that role with the Mustangs’ program.
Maxey is the No. 13 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings for 2019.
