Four-star offensive lineman Tanner Bowles announced Sunday that he has committed to Alabama.
Bowles — a 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect from Glasgow — is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 17 offensive tackle and No. 139 overall prospect in the 2019 class. He was a major UK recruiting target, but he picked up a scholarship offer from Alabama in February and committed while on a visit to the campus this weekend.
“First and foremost I want to thank the Lord, my family, friends, coaches, and everyone who has supported me and helped me along the way,” Bowles said in his Instagram announcement. “With much thought, prayer, and conversations with my family, today I am verbally committing to play football for the University of Alabama. #RTR”
Bowles’ announcement came a few days after another top in-state recruit — Scott County offensive lineman Bryan Hudson — announced a commitment to Virginia Tech. Hudson was also a major UK recruiting target.
The two most recent commitments mean four of the top five players from the state of Kentucky — according to the 247Sports rankings — have now committed to out-of-state schools. Milton Wright, the No. 1 player in the class, also has several major offers, and Ohio State is seen as an early favorite in his recruitment. The other top-five local players — Jacob Lacey (Notre Dame) and Stephen Herron (Michigan) — committed to other schools early in their recruitments.
UK did not sign any in-state football recruits in its class of 2018, the first time that has happened in the program’s history.
