Vernon Carey — the No. 1 overall basketball prospect in the class of 2019, according to Rivals.com — has narrowed his recruitment to five schools.
Carey — a 6-foot-10 power forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — is now considering Kentucky, Duke, Miami, Michigan State and North Carolina. He cut Kansas, UCLA and Florida from his previous list.
There were no surprises in Carey’s final five. Michigan State is the only school he’s been to for an official visit. Kentucky hosted him for an unofficial visit more than a year ago, and he told the Herald-Leader last month that he’s been in contact with Bam Adebayo about possibly playing for the Cats. Duke and UNC have been recruiting him hard for more than a year, and his father is a former football standout at Miami.
MaxPreps.com named Carey the national junior of the year after he led University School (Fla.) to a state championship this past season. He averaged 26.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game as a junior and is now one of the top prospects on the Nike circuit.
