COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — UK Coach John Calipari arrived at the U.S. Olympic training complex here Saturday morning to see several of the Wildcats’ top recruiting targets.
It was the third day of training camp for the USA Basketball U18 hopefuls Saturday, the first day that college coaches were permitted to attend the event. Coaches will also be allowed back into the camp Sunday.
The camp roster is loaded with UK recruits, including five-star point guard Tyrese Maxey, who has already committed to the Wildcats for the 2019 class. Other 2019 recruits with UK scholarship offers in attendance are Bryan Antoine, Keion Brooks, Matthew Hurt, Jalen Lecque and Scottie Lewis.
Kentucky is also keeping a close eye on Kira Lewis, who is planning to visit Lexington later this month and could pick up an offer during that trip. Another player on the UK watch list this weekend is Cole Anthony, the No. 1-ranked point guard in the 2019 class and a likely UK recruiting target.
This year’s U18 team — coached by Kansas’ Bill Self — will compete for FIBA gold in Canada later this month.
Other coaches in the bleachers at USA camp Saturday morning included Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Indiana’s Archie Miller, Michigan’s John Beilein, Alabama’s Avery Johnson, Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann and Texas A&M’s Billy Kennedy.
In addition to Self, other coaches with USA Basketball ties — such as Arizona’s Sean Miller, Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Purdue’s Matt Painter — have been here since Friday.
