COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — UK commitment Tyrese Maxey made it through the first cuts for the USA Basketball U18 national team Sunday morning, making him one of 18 players still competing for 12 spots on the squad.
Maxey was one of 33 prospects invited to the U18 training camp, which started Thursday evening and is being run by Kansas Coach Bill Self. Three other players with UK scholarship offers for 2019 — Keion Brooks, Matthew Hurt and Jalen Lecque — also made the cut, as did probable UK target Cole Anthony.
UK targets Bryan Antoine, Kira Lewis and Scottie Lewis were among the 15 players who did not make the lists of finalists Sunday. Final cuts are expected to take place Tuesday morning, and the 12 players who make the team will travel with Self to Canada and compete for a FIBA gold medal later this month.
The 18 finalists: Anthony, Armando Bacot, Brooks, DJ Carton, Hunter Dickinson, Ayo Dosunmu, Quentin Grimes, Kamaka Hepa, Hurt, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Josiah James, Lecque, Maxey, Justin Moore, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Anton Watson, Rocket Watts and Coby White.
