UK commitment Tyrese Maxey returned to the court Saturday night after missing time with a sprained ankle and helped the USA Basketball U18 team defeat Canada, 113-74, to win a gold medal in the FIBA Americas U18 tournament.
Maxey, who suffered a sprained ankle in the team’s final pool game earlier this week, scored two points in 12 minutes against Canada. He started in all three of Team USA’s pool games, averaging 11.0 points in 20.0 minutes, before missing the quarterfinal and semifinal games with the ankle injury.
UK Coach John Calipari and assistant Joel Justus were in Canada to see Maxey and uncommitted UK targets Matthew Hurt and Cole Anthony, among other recruits on the USA squad.
Anthony scored a team-high 18 points and Hurt chipped in 17 points.
