John Calipari and Penny Hardaway were both courtside to watch the consensus No. 1 overall player in the 2019 class, James Wiseman, on Wednesday night in the opening game of the Nike Peach Jam event in Augusta, Ga.
Wiseman is expected to choose either UK or Memphis. His team pulled out a 70-69 victory over a squad led by Vernon Carey, the No. 1 player in the Rivals.com rankings and another major Kentucky target. Carey is also considering Duke, Miami, Michigan State and North Carolina.
Calipari was joined in Augusta on Wednesday night by assistant coaches Kenny Payne and Joel Justus, while UK assistant Tony Barbee started the week off at the Under Armour event in nearby Cartersville, Ga.
Barbee watched Pendleton County star Dontaie Allen, who tallied 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists in a 56-54 loss at the Under Armour event. The in-state standout for the class of 2019 is on UK’s radar for a possible scholarship offer.
Head coaches at Allen’s game Wednesday night included Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, Chris Mack and Bob Huggins.
