Five-star basketball recruit Kahlil Whitney says he has received a scholarship offer from Kentucky.
Whitney — a 6-foot-6 wing player in the class of 2019 — told Scott Burgess of Prep Hoops on Friday that he has picked up the UK offer. “It was great. Coach Cal reached out to me after one of my games at the Peach Jam Invitational and talked to me. He wants to get me on campus soon. So, yeah, it was cool.”
Calipari also watched Whitney play at an event in Wisconsin on Friday night. The Chicago native now plays his high school ball in New Jersey and is the No. 14 overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports rankings. He expects to cut his list to eight school sometime soon, and he wants to make an early decision and sign with the school of his choice in November.
Illinois has been a mainstay in his recruitment up to this point, and Georgetown, Florida State and Louisville are among the many others pursuing him. Whitney averaged 21.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game on the Nike circuit during the spring, shooting 38 percent from three-point range.
The UK interest has obviously raised eyebrows in recruiting circles. 247Sports national analyst Brian Snow, who specializes in midwest prospects, logged a Crystal Ball pick in favor of the Wildcats on Saturday morning.
