Five-star guard RJ Hampton landed a scholarship offer from Kentucky on Tuesday, becoming the seventh player in the 2020 class to confirm such an offer from the Wildcats.
This one wasn’t a surprise. Hampton has long been one of the top stars in the 2020 class and was actually the first prospect from that group to have an in-home visit with John Calipari last month, meeting with the UK coach just a few days into the fall recruiting period.
Hampton — a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Texas — is expected to visit Kentucky next weekend for Big Blue Madness following an official visit to Memphis last month. He also has early scholarship offers from Duke, Kansas, Texas and several other top programs.
Though he has already said he will not reclassify to 2019, there are still some rumblings that Hampton might re-consider such a move. James Wiseman — the No. 1 player in the 2019 class and top target on UK’s recruiting board — is friends with Hampton from USA Basketball and has talked to the young guard about possibly joining him in the 2019 class and playing for the same college.
Wiseman is expected to pick either Kentucky or Memphis.
Hampton is the No. 6 overall prospect in the 2020 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. UK has also extended offers to guards Sharife Cooper, Jalen Green and Jeremy Roach, forwards Scottie Barnes and Jalen Johnson, and center N’Faly Dante.
