UK Coach John Calipari plans to see several top recruiting targets this weekend, the Herald-Leader has learned.
Calipari will be watching UK signee Tyrese Maxey as well as three five-star players in the 2020 class: highly touted guards RJ Hampton and Jalen Green, and star center N’Faly Dante. All three of the younger players already have scholarship offers from Kentucky, and all three have been mentioned in recruiting circles as possibilities to move to the 2019 class.
Green — a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from California — is the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2020 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Hampton — a 6-4 combo guard from Texas — is the No. 5 player in those rankings. Dante — a 6-11 prospect from Mali, now playing for a high school in Kansas — is the No. 9 overall player in the class.
Dante could help solve the Cats’ potential frontcourt problems for next season if he were to reclassify, though he has not talked about that possibility publicly. He was the second player in the 2020 class to land a scholarship offer from Kentucky, following five-star wing Scottie Barnes, and looks to be a major priority for the Wildcats.
Calipari took to Twitter on Saturday to announce that he would be recruiting this weekend.
“I’m gonna spend two days out on the road recruiting but before I left we had individual work and a film session. I’m encouraged,” Calipari tweeted. “These kids understand what’s between us and doing something special. Today they really brought it. I like my team. I really like my team. We’ve got work to do and thank goodness it’s November. #BBN, we need your help by encouraging these players and ME! It’s not going to be easy.”
