Rivals.com national analyst Corey Evans logged a Future Cast prediction in favor of Auburn for North Oldham guard Justin Powell on Monday, shortly after the Kentucky basketball star wrapped up his official visit to the SEC school.
Powell — a 6-foot-5 prospect from Louisville — started his high school career at Trinity, moved briefly to Montverde Academy (Fla.) and will wrap up as a senior at North Oldham this season. He’s currently considered a three-star recruit in the 2020 class, and he got off to a great start to the spring with his Nike travel team several weeks ago.
“The 1-2, kind of a combo. Whatever fits the system, I’ll go and I’ll play. I don’t really have a set position,” Powell told the Herald-Leader in April. “But whatever they need me for, I’ll play it. … I’m a facilitator. I like finding my teammates. I like shooting threes, obviously. But I just like facilitating and finding my teammates when they’re open.”
At the time, he mentioned Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Xavier as the schools recruiting him the hardest, though he also said he was hearing regularly from UK assistant coach Joel Justus, who ended up visiting Powell a few days after his Nike league debut.
“Obviously, it’s a great program — big blue-blood program. And they’re obviously the best of the best. So it would be pretty cool,” Powell said.
The Herald-Leader was also told this spring that — unless UK came in with an early scholarship offer — Auburn would be the most likely school to get his commitment, which is expected to come in time for the early signing period in November.
