Five-star forward Jonathan Kuminga — the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2021 class — narrowed his recruitment to 10 schools Wednesday, and there was a notable omission.
Kuminga did not list Louisiana State among his many choices, a surprise given that the Tigers had been seen as a possible favorite by recruiting insiders in recent weeks. The 10 schools that did make Kuminga’s latest list were Kentucky, Auburn, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan, Texas Tech and Washington.
UK Coach John Calipari has made several trips to New Jersey this fall to visit Kuminga at The Patrick School — which is also Nick Richards’ alma mater — and the Wildcats are clearly making the 6-foot-8 forward from Congo a major recruiting priority.
Rivals.com and 247Sports both rank Kuminga as the No. 1 overall player in the 2021 class, but recruiting experts are expecting him to eventually reclassify to 2020 and play college basketball next season. With LSU seemingly out, there’s no clear sense of who the favorite might be, and it’s likely that official visits will play a major role in Kuminga’s decision, which is not expected anytime soon.
UK has already hosted Kuminga for an unofficial visit earlier this year, and he was at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night to see the Wildcats defeat No. 1 Michigan State in their season opener.
