A familiar name tops the first class of 2023 rankings from 247Sports.
Dajuan Wagner Jr. — the son of Dajuan Wagner and grandson of Milt Wagner — is No. 1 on the initial list of the top 50 players in the 2023 class, 247Sports announced Wednesday. Wagner will be a sophomore at Camden High School in New Jersey this year after averaging 18.5 points per game as a freshman last season.
He has plenty of Kentucky ties, and John Calipari has already watched him play.
Wagner’s father was one of Calipari’s most highly touted recruits at Memphis and the UK coach’s original “one-and-done” player, going No. 6 overall in the NBA Draft after his freshman season with the Tigers in 2002. Wagner’s grandfather was a standout player at Louisville in the 1980s and was later on Calipari’s staff at Memphis. He also served as an assistant coach at UTEP and Auburn under Tony Barbee, one of Kentucky’s current assistant coaches.
Last season, Wagner was teammates at Camden High with Lance Ware, who will be a freshman at Kentucky this season.
California native Mikey Williams, Canadian standout Elijah Fisher, Iowa star Omaha Biliew and Baltimore standout Kwame Evans Jr. round out the top five. Bronny James — the son of NBA star LeBron James — is No. 30 in the initial 247Sports rankings for the 2023 class.
Louisville Male small forward Kaleb Glenn — at No. 43 overall — is the only Kentuckian on 247Sports’ list.
