For more than a year, Jonathan Kuminga has been the undisputed No. 1 player in the basketball recruiting class of 2021, holding the top spots in the Rivals.com, 247Sports and ESPN rankings.

The bigger rankings debate for that group has been centered on who should come next in the class, with the top candidates being smooth-shooting 6-foot-9 forward Patrick Baldwin Jr., versatile 6-10 power forward Paolo Banchero, and unique 7-foot prospect Chet Holmgren.

Though Kuminga has not yet officially announced a move to the 2020 class, he did graduate from his New Jersey high school over the weekend, and it’s become even more clear that reclassification is a foregone conclusion. So, who will be the new No. 1 in 2021?

Kuminga

The new Rivals.com rankings for the basketball recruiting class of 2021 were released Wednesday, and the top five players on the list remained unchanged.

Five-star forward Jonathan Kuminga is the still the No. 1 player in the class, followed by power forward Paolo Banchero at No. 2, small forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. at No. 3, 7-footer Chet Holmgren at No. 4, and versatile forward Jabari Smith at No. 5.

Kuminga is one of Kentucky’s top recruiting targets, and the Herald-Leader has been told recently that UK is one of four most likely landing spots for the Congo native, along with Auburn, Duke and Louisiana State (even though LSU was not on his most current list of schools). Kuminga is also widely expected to reclassify to 2020 later this summer.

Todd

A few recruiting notes for Thursday …

Kentucky coaches will be in North Carolina on Monday — the first day of the fall recruiting period — to see five-star forward Isaiah Todd, according to USA Today’s Jason Jordan. Todd is one of the Wildcats’ top remaining targets for the 2020 class and an important prospect as UK looks to add some frontcourt players to its group of commitments for next year.

UK coaches will also be in Memphis later this month to see 2021 point guard Kennedy Chandler, according to the Commercial Appeal’s Mark Giannotto. Chandler has emerged as a five-star recruit in the 2021 class and has been on UK’s radar for a while. Giannotto also reported that coaches from Duke and Tennessee are expected to visit Chandler next week to start off the fall recruiting period.

A trio of five-star basketball recruits are expected in Rupp Arena on Saturday night for Kentucky’s game against Kansas, the Herald-Leader was told.

UK will host class of 2019 signee Tyrese Maxey, elite 2020 center Hunter Dickinson, and class of 2021 shooting guard Randy Brady.

Dickinson — a 7-foot-2 center from high school basketball powerhouse DeMatha (Md.) — is the No. 19 overall player in the 2020 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He took official visits to Notre Dame and Purdue in the fall and is also getting recruiting attention from Duke, Michigan and several other top schools.
