UK Coach John Calipari held his regular end-of-the-week press conference Friday to preview the Cats’ home game against Auburn on Saturday, and class of 2015 signee Charles Matthews came up.

Calipari was asked what he saw in Matthews, who is now ranked lower than most UK recruits, when he offered him a scholarship back in 2013.

“I loved his competitiveness and his fight,” Calipari said. “I loved how he is a multiple-position guy. Last summer, they tried to play him at point guard. That’s not what he is. He’s a playmaker off the ball. He’s a slasher. He’s a finisher. I loved his body and his ability to defend. I think he’s going to be an absolute knockdown … be able to play three positions (like) the guys that we have here.

Some of Kentucky’s biggest basketball recruiting targets were in Colorado last weekend for Team USA mini-camp, which included nearly 50 players from all classes of high school.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels was among those on hand to evaluate those prospects. He shared his thoughts on 2015 post player Caleb Swanigan — who is to visit UK this weekend — in our story about Calipari’s NBA combine.

Daniels also watched UK commitment Charles Matthews and top targets Jaylen Brown and Stephen Zimmerman last weekend. His takeaways:

UK basketball recruits Charles Matthews and Udoka Azubuike will not be participating in the AAU Super Showcase in Louisville this week.

The AAU teams of both players’ are in town, but neither prospect made the trip. Matthews is UK’s only commitment for the class of 2015. Azubuike has a UK scholarship offer for the class of 2016.

That leaves Orlando shooting guard Antonio Blakeney as the only UK recruiting target in the Super Showcase. UK assistant coach John Robic watched him p;ay Thursday morning.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels talked to the Herald-Leader on Thursday about the recruiting service’s new Top 100 rankings for the class of 2015, which were released earlier in the day.

His insight on those rankings will be available on Kentucky.com later this evening.

Here are some interesting tidbits that didn’t make that story:

Daniels on Diamond Stone, the new No. 1 player in the Scout.com rankings:

“The biggest change I noticed in Diamond Stone was his body. He’s gotten in shape. He’s more mobile, he’s getting off the ground better and he’s really affecting the game on the defensive end more than I’ve ever seen him before. And to go with that, he is a terrific scorer. He can score with his back to the rim, over both shoulders. He has very good hands, really good touch around the rim. He consistently makes mid-range jump shots. And one of the games I watched, he hit four threes. So he’s certainly capable of stepping out on the floor and making those shots too. I was just really impressed with his pure dominance. He’s changed his body and improved his game, and that’s what you want to see at this stage.”

John Calipari took a little time off from his book tour Monday to see one of his future players.

The UK coach flew to Chicago for an in-home visit with combo guard Charles Matthews, the program’s only commitment so far for the class of 2015.

Matthews committed to UK in February and is considered a five-star prospect by every major recruiting service. He’ll play this spring and summer with the Chicago Meanstreets program in the Nike EYBL, which starts this weekend in Sacramento.

Last year, Matthews and UK signee Tyler Ulis were teammates with Meanstreets.

Matthews can’t officially sign with Kentucky until November.

Top UK recruiting target Malik Newman remains the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2015, according to Rivals. Newman — a 6-foot-4 guard from Mississippi — is also ranked No. 1 by 247Sports. ESPN and Scout.com have him No. 2 in the class.
