Jamal Murray was not named to the team that will represent Canada at the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympics, freeing him up to enroll at UK for the first day of classes next week.

Murray – a five-star combo guard – helped lead Canada to a silver medal in the Pan Am Games earlier this month and worked out with the national team at its training camp this week.

He likely would have been one of the 13 players named to the Olympic qualifying team Thursday, but that would have jeopardized his eligibility to play for the Wildcats this season.

Jamal Murray will enroll in classes at UK instead of trying out for Canada’s Olympic qualifying team, according to Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca.

Enrolling at UK was the expected route for Murray, who committed to the Wildcats earlier this summer after reclassifying from 2016. The Ontario native could have participated in Canada’s tryouts for the Olympic qualifying team, but if he made the squad it would have interfered with his coursework at Kentucky.

During the Southeastern Conference summer teleconference Monday morning, UK Coach John Calipari was asked about the late signing of five-star guard Jamal Murray and the versatility he will bring to Lexington next season.

In his response, Calipari mentioned the possibility of a three-guard lineup but said it might be tough to keep others off the court.

“I’ve played all kind of different teams, whether it’s smaller teams, bigger teams, longer teams,” he said. “(Murray) is a playmaking guard who can play 1 or 2 and can really score the ball. Great in pick and rolls. Can play with Tyler (Ulis) or you could play three guards at times if you chose to do that.

An ESPN spokesman told the Herald-Leader on Monday morning that Jamal Murray’s announcement will not be shown on ESPNU, contrary to previous reports.

Top University of Kentucky basketball recruiting target Jamal Murray is using his second official visit on a trip to Oregon this week.

Murray started the visit Thursday, according to Tariq Sbiet of North Pole Hoops. The 6-foot-5 combo guard from Kitchener, Ontario, used his first official visit on a trip to Kentucky last month.

UK is recruiting Murray for the class of 2015, although the five-star prospect remains a member of the 2016 class so far.
