UK assistant coach Tony Barbee was back at the City of Palms Classic on Tuesday evening to check out James Wiseman, arguably the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2019.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis — is ranked No. 1 in the junior class by Scout.com and ESPN, and Kentucky is the early favorite in his recruitment. He struck down rumors earlier this month that he might reclassify to 2018 and play college basketball next season.

Barbee watched top 2019 prospects Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis at the Florida-based showcase Monday night.

Wiseman

Five-star basketball recruit James Wiseman is expected to meet with a UK assistant coach Saturday, the first day of the fall recruiting period, the Herald-Leader has learned.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Nashville — is now playing for Memphis East and recently moved to No. 1 in the ESPN rankings for the 2019 class. He’s rated no lower than No. 4 in any of the other major website rankings for the junior class and is No. 2 overall in the 247Sports composite rankings.

UK assistant coach Joel Justus scouted Wiseman at a FIBA event in Argentina this summer, and Coach John Calipari watched him on the Nike circuit.

Wiseman spoke in July about his early interest in UK’s program.
