Five-star small forward Jaylen Brown announced his commitment to California during his senior banquet Friday night.

Brown — a 6-foot-7 prospect from Marietta, Ga. — chose the Bears over Kentucky, Michigan and North Carolina. The timing of his announcement was unexpected. The destination was, too.

Michigan had the most buzz coming into this week, and many recruiting analysts predicted Kentucky would be the Wolverines’ biggest competition to land Brown, who Scout.com ranks as the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2015.

Five-star small forward Jaylen Brown is no longer considering Kansas, according to Matt Scott, who covers the Jayhawks for 247Sports.

If true, that would leave Kentucky, California, Michigan and North Carolina as the only schools on Brown’s list. The 6-foot-7 prospect from Marietta, Ga., is considered the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2015 by Scout.com.

Michigan recently emerged as the favorite in Brown’s recruitment, though Kentucky has also been mentioned prominently over the past couple of days. Brown played for an Adidas program on the AAU circuit, and Michigan would be the only Adidas school on his list if he has eliminated Kansas. UK, Cal and North Carolina are all Nike schools.

California Coach Cuonzo Martin could be on the verge of assembling one of the best recruiting classes in the country.

McDonald’s All-Americans Jaylen Brown, Ivan Rabb and Caleb Swanigan all spoke to the Herald-Leader about their interest in the Cal Bears earlier this week in Chicago, and all three sounded serious about the program.

Rabb seems the most likely to pick California.

ESPN college basketball analysts Jeff Goodman and Jeff Borzello took a closer look at the recruitment of elite prospect Jaylen Brown this week.

Kentucky is one of eight schools still in the mix for Brown, who is regarded as the best uncommitted recruit in the class of 2015. Goodman and Borzello both mentioned Kansas prominently with Brown’s recruitment and also explored the relationship between Brown and Adidas. (It’s worth noting that Brown’s quote in the video about going to an “Adidas school” is several months old and he has since backtracked on that comment).

CHICAGO — Don’t expect a college decision from Jaylen Brown, Malik Newman or Stephen Zimmerman during McDonald’s All-American week.

All three players spoke to the Herald-Leader on Sunday night in Chicago, where they will take part in McDonald’s week festivities leading up to Wednesday night’s nationally televised all-star game.

Brown said he had “about a month” to go in his recruitment during one point in the conversation. He also said it was “fair to say” that he could wait until current college players announce their NBA intentions before making his own college choice.

UK Coach John Calipari was back on the recruiting trail Saturday night, this time watching five-star small forward Jaylen Brown play in Georgia.

Brown — the No. 1 player in the class of 2015, according to Scout.com — scored 25 points in Wheeler’s 83-35 rout of Milton. The 6-foot-7 prospect visited UK for Big Blue Madness and is also considering Kansas, UCLA, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan and North Carolina.

Some of Kentucky’s biggest basketball recruiting targets were in Colorado last weekend for Team USA mini-camp, which included nearly 50 players from all classes of high school.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels was among those on hand to evaluate those prospects. He shared his thoughts on 2015 post player Caleb Swanigan — who is to visit UK this weekend — in our story about Calipari’s NBA combine.

Daniels also watched UK commitment Charles Matthews and top targets Jaylen Brown and Stephen Zimmerman last weekend. His takeaways:
