Kentucky missed out Monday night on Luke Kennard, who announced his commitment to Duke for the class of 2015.

Still, the Cats should boast one of the most talented backcourts in the country when the 2015-16 season rolls around.

UK already has a commitment from Chicago star Charles Matthews, a versatile 6-foot-5 prospect who has the tools to be one of John Calipari’s top perimeter defenders as a freshman.

Three scholarship guards will likely be returning players on that 2015-16 roster. Dominique Hawkins will be a junior by then, and current signees Tyler Ulis and Devin Booker will be sophomores. Neither Ulis nor Booker is expected to be a “one-and-done” player.

Top basketball recruit Luke Kennard announced his commitment to Duke on Monday night.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard had been one of Kentucky’s top recruiting priorities for the class of 2015. Coach John Calipari watched him play several times this season, and Kennard and his family made several trips to Lexington to see the Cats in Rupp Arena.

The Kennard family downplayed those visits during the recruitment. They also said that the family’s ties to Kentucky — his father played at Georgetown College and his grandfather is a UK fan from Paintsville — would have little impact on the final decision.

Luke Kennard is ready to announce his college decision.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard will reveal his choice Monday at 7:45 p.m., during a ceremony at his high school in Franklin, Ohio.

Kentucky has long been considered the favorite for Kennard, who grew up a UK fan and has taken several unofficial visits to Lexington over the past few months. But he took his only official visit — to Duke — earlier this month.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels is predicting Kennard will give his commitment to Coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils.

“The only official visit Kennard has taken is to Duke,” Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “I think Coach K and his staff did a tremendous job recruiting him and (they have) the edge in this one.”

Kennard is also considering Ohio State, Michigan, Louisville, North Carolina and Florida.

UK already has one commitment for the class of 2015: Chicago native Charles Matthews, who is also a shooting guard. Coach John Calipari is also recruiting Mississippi’s Malik Newman, another shooting guard and arguably UK’s top target for 2015.

Scout.com ranks Kennard as the No. 14 overall prospect in the junior class.

UK recruiting targets Myles Turner and Luke Kennard are taking their official visits to Duke this weekend, and both players seem to be having a good time.

Turner tweeted a picture of himself, Kennard and fellow five-star prospect Chase Jeter in the student section at the Duke-North Carolina game on Saturday night. The Blue Devils defeated their top rival, 93-81.

Kennard and his high school coach also tweeted earlier in the day that they met Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo, who were apparently in town for the game.

Kentucky is viewed as a long shot in Turner’s recruitment. Kennard has narrowed his list to seven schools, and UK and Duke are thought to be at the top of his list.

Top UK recruit Luke Kennard will travel to Duke this weekend for his first official visit.

Kennard — a five-star player in the Class of 2015 — will attend Saturday’s game against rival North Carolina, another school on his list. His junior season ended Saturday night with a loss in the Ohio state playoffs.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard is considering Kentucky, Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan and Florida in addition to the two North Carolina schools. He has not scheduled any other official visits, though he has taken several unofficial visits to UK over the past few months.

Scout.com ranks Kennard as the No. 14 overall prospect in the Class of 2015. He is planning to make a college decision sometime this spring.

UK Coach John Calipari and assistant coach Orlando Antigua watched Class of 2015 target Luke Kennard score 45 points in a victory at the King of the Bluegrass Showcase in Louisville on Saturday.

Kennard also had 13 rebounds in Franklin (Ohio) High School’s 96-84 victory over Taylor County. The 6-foot-5 guard was 14-for-26 from the field and 15-for-18 from the free-throw line. It was the third time this season that Calipari has watched Kennard, who has narrowed his list to seven schools.

Mark Kennard, the player’s father, told the Herald-Leader on Friday that the family has not yet set up any official visits. They hope to have some of those trips scheduled in the next 3-4 weeks. Kennard has said he would like to make a college decision sometime this spring.

UK recruit Luke Kennard is not just a shooter

Luke Kennard is one of the best shooters in the Class of 2015, but there’s a lot more to his game than that.

The 6-foot-5 guard from Franklin, Ohio, is averaging 40.3 points per game midway through his junior season. On Saturday night, he scored 38. None of those points came from beyond the three-point line.

“I’m sure he’s going to get stereotyped as a shooter,” said Scout.com’s Evan Daniels. “And he is a very good shooter. But he is so much more than just a shooter. His ball skills, his ability to make plays off the dribble. He’s athletic enough to score around the rim. He’s much more than just a shooter, no question about it.”

KETTERING, Ohio — UK Coach John Calipari and a couple of assistants were treated to high-scoring performances from two of the program’s biggest recruits Saturday night.

UK signee Tyler Ulis and Class of 2015 target Luke Kennard both put up impressive numbers in front of a sold-out crowd at the Flyin’ To The Hoop Invitational.

Kennard went first, scoring 38 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in Franklin (Ohio) High’s 67-64 loss to HCYA (Texas), a squad led by five-star North Carolina signee Justin Jackson. Kennard’s shot wasn’t falling like it usually does — he was 12 of 32 from the floor — but the 6-foot-5 guard made 14 of 16 free-throw attempts.
