Former UK recruiting target Malik Newman has asked for his release from Mississippi State and intends to transfer, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

Newman — a 6-foot-3 guard — was once considered to be UK’s top recruiting target in the class of 2015 before ultimately committing to Mississippi State, his father’s alma mater. He averaged 11.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in his freshman season with the Bulldogs, who did not make the NCAA Tournament in their first year under Coach Ben Howland.

Five-star basketball prospect Malik Newman announced his commitment to Mississippi State on Friday.

Newman — a 6-foot-3 guard from Jackson, Miss. — chose the Bulldogs over Kentucky, Kansas and Ole Miss. His father, Horatio Webster, was a standout player for Mississippi State in the late 1990s.

Kentucky was long seen as the favorite for Newman, who was targeted by Coach John Calipari more than two years ago as UK’s No. 1 backcourt priority in the class of 2015. In recent weeks, Mississippi State began to emerge as the new favorite, especially after the school hired Ben Howland as its head coach on March 24.

UK Coach John Calipari said Thursday that he anticipates adding “one or two” more players to next season’s roster.

Five-star shooting guard Malik Newman is not likely to be on the list.

Newman – a 6-foot-3 prospect from Jackson, Miss. – will announce his college decision Friday at 1 p.m., in a private ceremony that will be shown live on ClarionLedger.com.

According to Scout.com director of recruiting Evan Daniels, all signs are pointing to one of the local schools.

Five-star combo guard Malik Newman will reveal his college decision Friday at 1 p.m., and live video of the announcement will be available online.

Clarionledger.com will have a live stream of Newman’s announcement, which will be made from a “closed setting,” according to Clarion-Ledger reporter Courtney Cronin, who has been documenting Newman’s recruitment for more than a year as part of a multi-episode web series.

That means the announcement will not be made from his high school.

Five-star combo guard Malik Newman is one of UK’s top remaining recruiting targets in the class of 2015, and he’s arguably the best scorer in high school basketball.

A common narrative that has emerged in recent days — and one that has coincided with the rumors that he’ll end up at Mississippi State — is that there simply won’t be enough scoring opportunities for him if he were to come to Lexington.

Newman is at his best when he puts up lots of shots and gets in a rhythm. John Calipari has preached a team-first, shared-sacrifice approach ever since he arrived at Kentucky.

Top UK recruiting target Malik Newman is not planning to take any of his five official visits before announcing his college decision, Newman’s father told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger on Monday.

Newman is considering UK, Kansas, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and N.C. State, and he has taken only unofficial visits so far in his recruitment. His high school coach told the Herald-Leader last week that he would not be surprised if Newman chose not to take any official visits.

The departure of Devin Booker, Aaron Harrison and Andrew Harrison could ultimately help Kentucky in its pursuit of five-star combo guard Malik Newman, who remains open in his recruitment.

Newman has narrowed his list of schools to UK, Kansas, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and N.C. State. He has been on recruiting trips to most of those campuses, but he has not yet taken any of his official visits.

Callaway (Miss.) head coach David Sanders talked to the Herald-Leader on Thursday — after seven UK players declared for the NBA Draft — and discussed the recruitment of his star player. Here’s part of that conversation:

Devin Booker won’t be playing for Kentucky next season, but he’ll be watching.

And he thinks the Cats will be just fine.

The freshman shooting guard announced his decision to jump to the NBA alongside six teammates Thursday. While those seven sat on the stage, the players who will be returning to Kentucky next season watched from the practice court.

That group included freshman point guard Tyler Ulis, who came to Lexington in the same recruiting class as Booker. The two are best friends, and Booker acknowledged that part of him wanted to stay another year to play alongside Ulis one more time.

CHICAGO — Five-star guard Malik Newman talked to the Herald-Leader on Sunday night. Here’s what he had to say:

How much have you thought about recruiting since your high school season ended recently?
“I’ve been thinking about it a lot. My April will be very busy, so I’m just trying to see what I can squeeze in – days to go see certain schools and things like that.”

CHICAGO — Don’t expect a college decision from Jaylen Brown, Malik Newman or Stephen Zimmerman during McDonald’s All-American week.

All three players spoke to the Herald-Leader on Sunday night in Chicago, where they will take part in McDonald’s week festivities leading up to Wednesday night’s nationally televised all-star game.

Brown said he had “about a month” to go in his recruitment during one point in the conversation. He also said it was “fair to say” that he could wait until current college players announce their NBA intentions before making his own college choice.
