Duke announced Friday that No. 1 recruit Marvin Bagley has been cleared by the NCAA to play the upcoming 2017-18 basketball season.
Bagley — a 6-foot-11 power forward — announced last month that he would reclassify from 2018 and sign with Duke in hopes of playing this season. At that time, it was still unclear if he would be ruled eligible by the NCAA, but Bagley had been working toward the goal of playing college basketball this season for more than a year, and Friday’s announcement was expected.
“From the outset of this process, we were optimistic that it would end with the NCAA Eligibility Center certifying Marvin to compete for Duke University in 2017-18,” Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “We are thrilled for Marvin and the Bagley family. Their organization and efficiency were key to the successful conclusion of the certification process, as were the efforts of our Duke Athletics administration.”
