Duke announced Friday that No. 1 recruit Marvin Bagley has been cleared by the NCAA to play the upcoming 2017-18 basketball season.

Bagley — a 6-foot-11 power forward — announced last month that he would reclassify from 2018 and sign with Duke in hopes of playing this season. At that time, it was still unclear if he would be ruled eligible by the NCAA, but Bagley had been working toward the goal of playing college basketball this season for more than a year, and Friday’s announcement was expected.

“From the outset of this process, we were optimistic that it would end with the NCAA Eligibility Center certifying Marvin to compete for Duke University in 2017-18,” Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “We are thrilled for Marvin and the Bagley family. Their organization and efficiency were key to the successful conclusion of the certification process, as were the efforts of our Duke Athletics administration.”

ESPN recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi made an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Tuesday night to talk about No. 1 basketball recruit Marvin Bagley, who is still trying to make a move to the class of 2017 and enroll in college for this season.

Bagley — a 6-foot-11 power forward from the Los Angeles area — has an official list of UK, Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Southern Cal and UCLA, and he’s expected to make a college decision this month if he does indeed get cleared by the NCAA to play college basketball this season.

Biancardi noted that Bagley has already taken official visits to Duke and USC, and he’s scheduled to start an official visit to UCLA on Monday.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Marvin Bagley news has been aplenty this week, with buzz that the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2018 might reclassify and play college basketball this season, new visit plans, and a few changes on his 247Sports Crystal Ball page.

247Sports analyst Andrew Slater switched his prediction for Bagley to Duke on Friday, and the Blue Devils now hold a plurality of the picks on the player’s Crystal Ball page.

Bagley told reporters at the Nike Peach Jam earlier in the week that he’s planning official visits to Duke, Arizona and Southern Cal in the near future. The trip to Durham will come after this week’s games.

Duke is making a run on the 247Sports Crystal Ball page of Marvin Bagley, one of UK’s top basketball recruiting targets and the No. 1 player in the class of 2018.

Bagley — a 6-foot-11 prospect from Arizona playing his high school ball in the Los Angeles area — has narrowed his choices to UK, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Southern Cal and UCLA. His father told 247Sports earlier this week that Bagley will take the first official visit of his recruitment to Duke next month.

Starting Tuesday afternoon, three Duke writers for the 247Sports website logged Crystal Ball predictions in favor of the Blue Devils for Bagley, who is averaging 25.8 points, 14.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks on the Nike circuit this year.

Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN all rank Bagley as the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2018.

No. 1 basketball recruit Marvin Bagley is still considering six schools, but there’s been a slight shakeup in his list of college possibilities.

Bagley announced Friday that his top six now consists of Kentucky, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Southern Cal and UCLA. Last summer, the 6-foot-11 prospect from Arizona released a list of six that included Arizona State and Oregon but did not include Kansas or Southern Cal.

UK, Duke, Arizona and UCLA are the four schools that remain from that original list.

It appears that five-star point guard Trae Young will not make a college decision in time for the early signing period in November.

Young — UK’s top target at the position — told ESPN on Wednesday night that he doesn’t plan to sign this fall. “Just want to be able to watch these teams play and see how these teams play, as well as see who will be there when I get on campus,” he said.

UK and Oklahoma are considered the co-favorites in Young’s recruitment. The 6-foot-2 prospect from Norman, Okla., will take an official visit to Texas Tech, his father’s alma mater, this weekend.
