Five-star basketball recruit Quentin Grimes announced his commitment to Kansas on Wednesday night, the final day of the early signing period.

Grimes — a 6-foot-5 combo guard from the Houston area — picked the Jayhawks over fellow finalists Kentucky, Marquette and Texas. The Longhorns were thought to be Kansas’ top competition going into the fall signing period. Grimes is the No. 16 overall recruit in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Kansas now has the No. 1-ranked class in the country, according to 247Sports. Duke is No. 2, and Kentucky is ranked No. 3. Grimes joins a group of future Jayhawks that already included Top 50 recruits Devon Dotson, Silvio De Sousa and David McCormack.

Kentucky has already signed highly touted backcourt players Immanuel Quickley, Keldon Johnson and Tyler Herro for its 2018 class.

Quentin Grimes

Five-star combo guard Quentin Grimes will announce his college decision at 7:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, and the finalists are Kentucky, Kansas, Marquette and Texas.

Grimes — a 6-foot-5 prospect from the Houston area — emerged this fall as a major UK recruiting target. In fact, he was the first prospect to get a visit from UK Coach John Calipari during the fall recruiting period that began in September.

Kansas and Texas go into Wednesday night’s announcement as the two favorites in Grimes’ recruitment, however, and the Jayhawks have a majority of the predictions on Grimes’ 247Sports Crystal Ball page. Kansas’ Bill Self and Texas’ Shaka Smart have both visited Grimes in recent days.

Grimes

Five-star combo guard Quentin Grimes got a visit from Kansas on Sunday, according to Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels, and it was the second time in less than a week that the Jayhawks made the trip.

Bill Self and the entire Kansas coaching staff were in the Houston area Monday to visit Grimes, the No. 16 overall recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings for the class of 2018.

The Jayhawks have all of the picks on Grimes’ Crystal Ball page, but recruiting insiders have told the Herald-Leader in recent days that the recruitment is still a tough one to handicap. There have been various degrees of buzz for each of the other three schools on Grimes’ final list: UK, Marquette and Texas.

Kansas Coach Bill Self and all of his assistants were in Texas on Monday to see five-star guard Quentin Grimes, according to Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels.

Grimes — a 6-foot-5 prospect — is one of Kentucky’s top remaining recruiting targets in the class of 2018. He took an official visit to Marquette this past weekend and has taken previous official visits to UK, Kansas and Texas. He’s expected to choose one of those schools in the next couple of weeks.

Grimes

Five-star combo guard Quentin Grimes has now set dates for all four of his official visits.

Grimes — a 6-foot-5 prospect from the Houston area — will see Texas first on Sept. 22, visit Kentucky the following weekend and then travel to Kansas on Oct. 13 and Marquette on Oct. 20. 247Sports national analyst Andrew Slater reported those visit dates Friday.

Kansas has long been seen as the favorite in Grimes’ recruitment, though UK seems to be making some progress. He was the first player from the class of 2018 to have an in-home visit with John Calipari during the fall recruiting period, hosting the UK coach for a meeting last weekend. In an odd twist, Grimes will visit UK during Kansas’ midnight madness event, and he’ll be visiting Lawrence during the Wildcats’ Big Blue Madness.

UK Coach John Calipari was in Texas on Wednesday night to meet with class of 2018 point guard Quentin Grimes, who picked up a scholarship offer from the Wildcats during that visit.

Kansas, Arizona and Louisville are among the other schools that have offered Grimes, who averaged 28 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game as a junior this past season.
