Class of 2015 basketball standouts Skal Labissiere and Charles Matthews have officially signed with Kentucky.

Both players had signing ceremonies at their high schools earlier in the day.

Matthews — a 6-foot-5 guard from Chicago — committed to UK in February and tweeted the news of his signing Friday afternoon. His mother tweeted a picture of the actual signing ceremony.

Five-star power forward Skal Labissiere announced his commitment to Kentucky on Thursday and is expected to sign his national letter of intent with the school Friday afternoon.

But there is no guarantee that Labissiere will ever play for the Wildcats.

CBS Sports national college basketball writer Gary Parrish has covered Labissiere’s recruitment for more than two years, and his latest article on the subject raises more questions about the motives of Gerald Hamilton, who is Labissiere’s legal guardian. Parrish also discussed the issue earlier this week in a CBSSports.com podcast, which is available here.

(Hamilton has not returned several phone calls from the Herald-Leader over the past few days).

Parrish spoke to the Herald-Leader on Thursday about Labissiere, Hamilton, the recruitment and the possible problems UK could have in getting the highly touted basketball star cleared to play next season. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

Five-star power forward Skal Labissiere announced his commitment to Kentucky on Thursday night, two years after he became the first player from the class of 2015 to receive a scholarship offer from John Calipari.

Labissiere — a 6-foot-11 native of Haiti — is considered the No. 3 overall prospect in the class of 2015 by Scout.com. He attends high school in Memphis and chose the Wildcats over fellow finalists Memphis, Baylor, Georgetown, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Five-star basketball prospects Isaiah Briscoe and Skal Labissiere will both announce their college decisions Thursday on ESPNU, a source told the Herald-Leader on Monday.

The announcements will be part of ESPNU’s one-hour “Basketball Signing Day Special,” which will air live at 6 p.m. The early signing period begins Wednesday and runs through Nov. 19. Briscoe and Labissiere are the only two players currently scheduled to announce their decisions on the show.

Kentucky, St. John’s and UConn are the three finalists for Briscoe, a 6-foot-3 prospect from New Jersey who is considered the No. 1 point guard in the class of 2015. He visited St. John’s for that program’s final exhibition game Saturday, though many recruiting observers consider UK the favorite.

It appears that five-star forward Skal Labissiere will play basketball this season, despite a transfer flap with his former high school.

The UK recruit tweeted Monday night that he will play for “RYD Prep” this season.

“Happy to announce that I will be playing my senior year with RYD Prep! #ReachYourDream #letsgetit #blessed,” Labissiere said in the tweet.

Reach Your Dream Academy — the team Labissiere is referencing — is scheduled to play in the Kentucky Elite Shootout at Perry Central High School on Nov. 22. The Shootout is a pre-season event that will also include Huntington Prep (W.Va.), 22ft Academy and several Kentucky schools.

UK basketball recruit Skal Labissiere tweeted Thursday that he will be making his college decision “in about a month.”

The 6-foot-10 forward from Haiti took official visits to UK, North Carolina and Georgetown last month. He’ll be at Tennessee this weekend and Baylor next weekend before wrapping up his series of trips with an unofficial visit to hometown Memphis at the end of the month.

Labissiere told the Herald-Leader later Thursday that he has not yet set a specific date for the college announcement. It’s expected to come in time for the early signing period, which is Nov. 12-19.

Scout.com ranks Labissiere as the No. 3 overall prospect in the class of 2015. He was the first player from that class to receive a UK scholarship offer, though Memphis is now considered the heavy favorite in his recruitment.

The first basketball player from the class of 2015 to receive a UK scholarship offer has set a date for his first visit to Lexington.

Memphis-area forward Skal Labissiere will take an official visit to UK on Sept. 19-21, as first reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Labissiere — a 6-foot-10 prospect originally from Haiti — might miss his entire senior season due to a snag in his transfer plans. He missed almost his entire junior year with a back injury.
