PADUCAH — Without its star player, Evangelical Christian (Tenn.) lost 47-37 to Quality Education Academy (N.C.) on Saturday at Mustang Madness.

Class of 2015 big man Skal Labissiere — a top UK recruiting target — missed his 14th consecutive game with a stress fracture in his spine. Labissiere was hurt during Evangelical’s second game of the season back in November. The team is now 8-8 on the season, but Coach Terry Tippett said they probably “wouldn’t have lost but a couple” if he were in the lineup.

The last thing Tippett wants is to rush Labissiere back from the injury.

BENTON — It hasn’t been a smooth start to the season for top UK recruit Skal Labissiere.

The 6-foot-11 prospect struggled through pre-season workouts at Memphis-area Evangelical Christian School with a nagging back injury. ECS Coach Terry Tippett said Labissiere’s back would start hurting, then get better, then get worse again.

He was good to go for last month’s season opener, tallying 35 points and 16 rebounds in an ECS victory. That’s the only complete game he’s played so far.

BENTON, Ky. — The Marshall County Hoop Fest game between Curie High (Ill.) and Evangelical Christian (Tenn.) scheduled for Friday has been cancelled.

Evangelical Christian Coach Terry Tippett told the Herald-Leader that the expected winter weather was the reason for the cancellation.

The game was going to be missing its two star players anyway. Curie’s Cliff Alexander would have been serving a one-game suspension after receiving two technical fouls in his last game. Evangelical Christian’s Skal Labissiere — a top UK target — will be sidelined for several weeks with a stress fracture in his back.

Tournament organizers told the Herald-Leader that the rest of this weekend’s games will go on as planned. Some of the participating teams had already arrived in Marshall County on Thursday.

The full schedule and ticket info can be found at this link.

HAMPTON, Va. — John Calipari has seen a lot of recruits from the class of 2015 over the past few months. He has offered only one of them a scholarship.

Haitian big man Skal Labissiere — who received Calipari’s after one viewing last fall — said Saturday that UK and Memphis are the two schools “standing out” in the early stages of his recruitment.

The 6-foot-10 post player moved to Memphis after his home country was devastated by an earthquake in 2010. Six months after his first meeting with the UK coach, Labissiere is still surprised that Calipari offered him a scholarship so soon.

“When I heard it, I couldn’t say a thing because I was shocked,” he said. “He told me that I had the potential to be great.”

Two of UK’s biggest recruiting targets have been added to the Red State Blue State Series event set for Feb. 2 at Broadbent Arena in Louisville.

Junior center Jahlil Okafor and Whitney Young (Ill.) will take on sophomore center Skal Labissiere and Evangelical Christian (Tenn.) at 4:30 p.m., immediately following the game featuring UK commitment Karl Towns and Louisville commitment Quentin Snider.

Okafor is the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2014, according to Rivals.com. The 6-11 center has led Whitney Young to a 13-1 record this season, with the Dolphins’ only loss coming in overtime to nationally ranked No. 1 Montverde Academy (Fla.).

Okafor is considering UK along with several other schools, and talked to the Herald-Leader last week about his recruitment.
