John Calipari’s top remaining recruiting target in the Class of 2014 will announce his decision Friday, and it’s not looking good for Kentucky.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader on Thursday that he is expecting five-star small forward Stanley Johnson to choose Arizona. Daniels agreed with the popular narrative that an early decision from Johnson would be good news for the Tucson-based Wildcats.

“I think Arizona has been the favorite for quite some time,” he said. “And if it had gone longer, maybe Kentucky could make up some ground. But, at the end of the day, I think there’s a big distance issue for Stanley Johnson. And Arizona is a lot closer to home than Kentucky. I think that plays into it.”

Stanley Johnson is planning to announce his college decision Friday, his high school coach told the Herald-Leader early Wednesday morning.

Johnson has narrowed his list to Kentucky, Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon and Florida. The 6-foot-7 small forward has already taken official visits to UK, Arizona and USC, which are considered the three favorites in his recruitment.

Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight told the Herald-Leader that Johnson will announce his decision Friday during ESPNU’s recruiting special, which begins at 4 p.m. ET.

Conventional wisdom on the Stanley Johnson recruitment has shifted to Arizona as the most likely landing spot for the five-star small forward.

But ESPN posted its Recruiting Nation “Hot Board” on Tuesday and predicted that Johnson would end up picking Kentucky. The feature, which offered picks for all of the top uncommitted prospects in the Class of 2014, was accompanied by a note that stated, “Our predictions are based on what we’re hearing from high school coaches and from the prospects themselves. They are subject to change as more information becomes available.”

Many analysts have been saying that Arizona is the leader for Johnson, a 6-foot-7 prospect from California who is ranked among the top 10 players in the class by every major recruiting service. Kentucky and Southern Cal are thought to be the main competition.

Stanley Johnson has long been seen as Kentucky’s No. 1 target in the Class of 2014. But the longer his recruitment goes, the more it seems he won’t end up in Lexington.

Several prominent recruiting observers have said in recent weeks that Johnson is looking more and more like an Arizona lean. That camp includes 247Sports national analyst Jerry Meyer, who switched his prediction on Johnson from Kentucky to Arizona earlier this week.

Meyer said he always considered Arizona the favorite in Johnson’s recruitment, but he also thought the top prospect’s official visit for Big Blue Madness would have a big impact on his decision.

“I just thought the allure of Kentucky and the visit (would convince him). That’s really why I had Kentucky,” Meyer told the Herald-Leader. “Through talking to people and the information I was getting and just sort of reading the situation, I don’t think the visit quite had the impact that I thought it would have, as far as swaying him away from the West Coast.”

John Calipari added one highly touted shooting guard to his recruiting class of 2014 on Thursday, and he missed out on another.

So what’s next for the Wildcats?

UK currently has a three-man class consisting of Devin Booker, Karl Towns Jr. and Tyler Ulis. The Cats will likely need at least a couple of other newcomers to take the place of the expected departures from this season’s star-studded team.

The four uncommitted seniors who UK has been targeting are Stanley Johnson, Trey Lyles, Jahlil Okafor and Myles Turner.

Scout.com national analyst Evan Daniels offered some insight on what UK fans should expect next.

Kentucky fans feeling pessimistic about their chances of landing top recruit Stanley Johnson got a little more reason for worry Monday night.

247Sports analyst Jerry Meyer had been predicting that Johnson would ultimately commit to UK. He’s now picking Arizona.

Meyer tweeted that he switched his pick based on “recent intel I’ve received.” Johnson’s Crystal Ball page on the 247Sports site now shows 53 percent predicting Arizona, 41 percent predicting UK and 6 percent siding with Southern Cal.

Johnson — a Fullerton, Calif., native — has already taken official visits to Arizona and UK. He’s planning a trip to Southern Cal for this weekend. No college decision is expected until January.

247Sports ranks Johnson as the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2014.

The folks over at YayAreasFinest released their video mixtape of Stanley Johnson’s best plays of the summer Wednesday night.

There are plenty of explosive dunks (as always), but the video also gives a glimpse of Johnson’s improved ball handling abilities and his game away from the basket.

Kentucky will host Johnson on an official visit this weekend. He has narrowed his list to UK, Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon and Florida.

Johnson tweeted this Wednesday …

John Calipari is scheduled to visit his top recruiting target for the second time in as many weeks.

Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight told the Herald-Leader that Calipari will visit Stanley Johnson on Thursday. Johnson — a top-five prospect in the Class of 2014 — also got a visit from the UK coach on Sept. 12. He will take his official visit to Lexington for Big Blue Madness on Oct. 18.

Johnson is also considering Arizona, Southern Cal, Florida and Oregon.

Top Kentucky basketball target Stanley Johnson had an in-home visit with Southern Cal on Monday. The California native tweeted it was a “great” visit with the Trojans.

Many recruiting observers see USC as a possible dark-horse candidate for Johnson’s commitment, behind perceived frontrunners UK and Arizona. The 6-foot-7 small forward is also considering Oregon and Florida.

UK Coach John Calipari and Arizona Coach Sean Miller have both been to see Johnson for in-home visits in the past couple of weeks. The five-star prospect will take his official visit to UK on Oct. 18 for Big Blue Madness.

Stanley Johnson would team up with Kelly Oubre

A couple of national analysts said Monday night that Kentucky might just be the new favorite in the recruitment of Kelly Oubre.

That got some fans wondering: If Oubre — a top small forward in the class of 2014 — committed to the Cats, where would that leave Stanley Johnson?

Johnson also is  an elite small forward in the senior class, and he was one of the first 2014 prospects to receive an offer from Kentucky. Many consider him UK’s No. 1 priority in this recruiting cycle.

The California native made his feelings clear Tuesday. Oubre to UK would only make Lexington a more attractive destination:

Both players will take official visits to UK for Big Blue Madness on Oct. 18.
